Who are we?

Venture Crew 4 is an organization for young men and women in the Southern Illinois area who are at least 14 years of age, who have completed the 8th grade, and are no more than 20 years of age.

What is Venturing?

Venturing is a co-ed program created by the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who have similar interests in a multitude of experience areas including but not limited to high adventure, drama, sports, boating, etc...The focus of Crew 4 is high adventure activities such as canoeing, snow and water skiing, horseback riding, camping, hiking, rock climbing and rappelling, orienteering and also to enhance our member’s life experiences with positive social activities, and community service.

When do we meet?

Venture Crew 4 meetings will be on the 4th Sunday of each month at a time to be determined.

01-25-09 Eighteen members and guests of Venture Crew 4 spent the day skiing and snowboarding at Paoli Peaks in Southern Indiana. The weather was cold and there was snow off and on all day which made the skiing conditions perfect. A great time was had by all. Photos are available here. Thanks to Nick Barger for planning and organizing this event. Please stay tuned for details of an upcoming rock climbing and rappelling weekend.

7-28-08 Meeting date and meeting format changes were decided at July 15 Crew Meeting. At the July 15 crew meeting it was decided to no longer meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the IDOT building in Carbondale. The new meeting date will be the 4th Sunday of each month at a time and location to be determined. Each meeting will be at a different location such as a bowling alley, movie theater, skating rink, etc… Locations and times for the following months meeting will be decided at the regular 4th Sunday meeting. The first meeting under the new format will be held at Mike and Cathy Schmidt’s home. The meeting date and time will be August 24th at 3:00 p.m. We will view pictures of the Grand Teton hiking trip in Wyoming that is currently underway. More details will be communicated via text message prior to the meeting. If you are not getting crew text messages please call Dave at 201-9467 to sign up. NOTE THAT WE WILL NOT BE MEETING ON AUGUST 5TH OR AUGUST 19TH!!

7-28-08 NO MORE DUES!!! It was decided at our July 15 meeting to no longer charge dues. The dues were previously $1.00 per meeting. All dues must be paid through the July 15th meeting date. If you are not sure what you owe for back dues please contact Dave Barger.

5-16-08 - On May 4th, Venture Crew 4 went on a Caving Trip to Huntsinker Cave in Makanda, IL. Cliick image for photo.

We had 10 crewmembers with us and spent about 2 hours exploring the quarter mile long cave. Most of the time you had to duck or crawl through it. We all had a great time crawling around on the cave floor, sloshing through the “very” cold water and meeting the cave’s population of bats, bugs, and lizards. In the end, we were all muddy and wet but it was a great trip and we can’t wait to go on another one next year.
